Green Quilt

So now that there is a baby on the way, the green baby quilt is the priority. I planned it out a month ago and today finally got it all cut out. Unfortunately the upper tension on my sewing machine is not working so I can not sew today.

One Yard Wonders

I found a great book in my local library, One-Yard Wonders: 101 Sewing Fabric Projects; Look How Much You Can Make with Just One Yard of Fabric! by Rebecca Yakerand Patricia Hoskins. Full of ideas, nice modern ones, many of which you can do with just scraps. There are the usual place mats, coasters, some nice bags and aprons. They also have some fairly original ideas, a nice Obi wrap heating pad and an origami organizing box. They have patterns in the front for the projects that need one, but skip giving you patterns for squares and rectangles that you can draft yourself.
We are visiting my parents so I finally have time to sew. My Mum has condensed her fabric stash to a single banker's box to make room for more yarn, so we went fabric shopping for more than I really needed. I bought yard lengths pink scissors, blue scissors, pink threads, blue threads, a vintagy floral, a blue leafy, a 60s grey and green leaf, a polar bear and one and a half yards of a 60s owl print to make a stroller liner when we get home.

Origami Box
This just looked neat. It started as a 30 inch square piece of fabric lined with specially cut out heavy interfacing. It folds up, has a few machine sewn lines and then all the corners are hand sewn up. I have the interfacing almost ready for Mum to make one and all ready for me to make a little one. Directions with photos to follow.

Clothespin Aprons
I love to hang out laundry on the line, but need somewhere to put the pegs. I had seen these before and planned on making one. The book has a great pattern and I have it down to well under an hour to make it. The umbrella apron is from Mum's stash and bets are on weather the fabric is older than me or not. I goofed a little on the pocket binding, and added a french seam on the bottom.
It looks a little lumpy because it is full of bamboo clothes pins. The sunshine apron is also from Mum's stash. It was Ikea fabric originally used for my nursery curtains. I had to make a separate waistband and ties since it was not wide enough and used ready made bias binding instead of making my own. I bound the pockets in a continuous piece and that worked much better. This is Mum's and I think I will make another one for myself before we leave tomorrow.

Other Projects
I have the polar bears and batting cut out for an oven mitten. I think I can get a few bib aprons made, with the sewing fabric and perhaps the others. I need a bigger diaper sleeve as the one I have only fits one size 4 diaper and Monkey is getting bigger. I also have some more red fabric at home for the previously mentioned stroller pads.

Diaper Case is finished

The Diaper Case is complete. I made the pattern a little smaller because we put wipes in a ziplock rather than in a hard case (we use them so infrequently that they would dry out, plus it is way smaller). I also used a snap instead of velcro. It took a little less than an hour, most of which was setting up and putting away time. And picking the button. I really love the little strawberries.
I pulled a bunch more fabric from the boxes and put it in the laundry bin so that I can make more soon. We need another for the cloth diaper that lives in the diaper bag and we have lots of babies coming in my group of friends in the next couple of months.

Diaper Case

The other project I am slowly working on is a diaper case for Monkey's back up diaper and wipes in the diaper bag. I want something nicer than the ziplock bag an found this pattern poking around online (http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/dipecase.html). I am thinking strawberry print with a striped lining. I have no velcro though so it may end up with a snap unless it simmers until the next trip to the fabric store.

Green Subway Quilt

I got a haul of fabric from a yard sale in the fall, as much as I could carry home, which included a lot of greens. I enjoyed making Monkey's baby quilt and want to make more. So naturally I am thinking a green quilt. I am not sure where I came up with the idea, but the plan is to make it with subway blocks like subway tiles. I found some neat Pucci-esq green flannel for the backing. The trouble is Monkey. 12 month old babies are not conductive to quilt making. So I am working in tiny steps. Today is Laundry day, so today we washed the fabric.
